The Alpine Medical Clinic was established in 1989. In 2004, the clinic moved to the Bison Courtyard, an eco friendly building, located on Bear Street. We are committed to providing timely, friendly and a professional service to all residents from the Bow Valley, outlying communities and visitors to Banff.
Dr. Jane Fowke, a Co-founder of Alpine Medical Clinic, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our practice. She embarked on her medical journey at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, where she earned her qualifications in 1982. Following her training, she completed her General Practitioner and Obstetrical training in Glasgow, Scotland, before embarking on a new chapter in Canada alongside her husband in 1985.
In 1988, Dr. Fowke and her family made the picturesque town of Banff their home with her husband of 40 years, Dr. Ian Macdonald, the founder of Alpine Medical Clinic.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Fowke is an avid snowboarder, tennis player, and cross-country skier, finding joy and rejuvenation in the breathtaking landscapes of the Rockies. Her adventurous spirit extends beyond the slopes, as she embraces the challenges and thrills of outdoor pursuits.
Jane is a pioneer and strong advocate in women’s health, specializing in Rural OBS Gyne, and has personally delivered a large portion of Banff’s population. Her dedication to excellence in this field has positively impacted countless lives in our community.
Dr. Fowke’s dedication to excellence is mirrored in her family, where her four grown children embody her tenacity and drive. Among them are a lawyer, a surgeon, an M.D. serving as president of a skincare line, and the youngest, a Veterinarian—each making their mark in their respective fields.
In addition to her professional and recreational pursuits, Dr. Fowke enjoys travelling and exploring new destinations with her husband, creating cherished memories that complement their adventurous spirits.
Dr. Steve Shigeishi, MD, discovered his passion for medicine during his studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Entranced by the majestic landscapes of the west, he completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Calgary in 2002, where he refined his skills and embraced a holistic approach to patient care.
Since joining our clinic in the summer of 2003, Dr. Shigeishi has been an invaluable member of our team, dedicating over two decades to Alpine Medical—a testament to his unwavering commitment to healthcare excellence.
Dr. Shigeishi’s expertise extends beyond traditional family medicine. He is particularly passionate about mental health, making it a central focus and subspecialty within his practice. With a compassionate approach, he strives to provide comprehensive care that addresses both the physical and psychological well-being of his patients.
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Shigeishi finds solace and rejuvenation in the beauty of the outdoors. Whether biking, cross-country skiing, or engaging in the challenging sport of biathlon—a recent addition to his adventurous pursuits—Steve embraces an active lifestyle that reflects his dedication to holistic wellness.
Completing her training in family medicine at the University of Calgary, Dr. Triska brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her practice. Drawing from her background in physiotherapy, she has cultivated a special interest in musculoskeletal and sports medicine, dedicating herself to providing advanced treatment options for her patients. Dr. Triska is proficient in administering ultrasound-guided injections, including prolotherapy and PRP, offering effective solutions for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
In addition to her expertise in musculoskeletal health, Dr. Triska is deeply passionate about low-risk obstetrics, maternity, and newborn care. Guiding expectant mothers through the miraculous journey of pregnancy and childbirth, she provides compassionate and comprehensive care, ensuring the well-being of both mother and baby.
Beyond her medical practice, Dr. Triska is an active outdoors enthusiast, finding joy and rejuvenation in activities such as mountain biking, backcountry skiing, and rock and ice climbing as well as chasing her young family around. Her adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors mirror her approach to patient care—dynamic, proactive, and focused on achieving optimal health outcomes.
Meet Dr. Megan Webb, our newest addition to the Alpine Medical clinic team, joining us in March 2024. A recent graduate in Family Medicine, Dr. Webb brings with her a passion for rural obstetrics and gynecology. Born and raised in Calgary, she has now chosen Canmore as her home, eager to embrace its active lifestyle alongside her fiancé.
Outside of her medical practice, Dr. Webb finds joy in exploring the great outdoors. You might catch her backcountry skiing in the pristine Canadian Rockies, hitting the trails for a run, or navigating the mountain terrain on her mountain bike. With her dedication to healthcare and her love for adventure, Dr. Webb embodies the spirit of our clinic, committed to serving the community while embracing the beauty of our surroundings.
Meet Dr. Ashley Bakker, Banff’s very own hometown hero, returning to Alpine Medical Clinic after an adventurous stint in Fernie. With roots firmly planted in this mountainous paradise, Dr. Bakker brings back her expertise and a truckload of enthusiasm to care for her community.
A Banff native, Dr. Bakker started her medical journey in British Columbia but couldn’t resist the pull of home sweet home. She’s thrilled to be back in town, ready to share her expertise and passion for local care.
When she’s not donning the white coat, Dr. Bakker is a proud mom of three, juggling stethoscopes and soccer games with equal finesse.

Meet Dr. Alek Szmigielski, our locum doctor (like a supply teacher, but with more stethoscopes) who loves it here so much, he can’t stay away! Raised in Saskatoon, SK, Alek pursued his Bachelor of Science in Physiology & Pharmacology and Medical Degree at the University of Saskatchewan. He then moved to Calgary for his residency training through the University of Calgary’s family medicine program.
Dr. Alek has a passion for full-scope general practice- with Women’s Health, hospital medicine, and rural emergency medicine. Alek hopes to spend more time in the Bow Valley where he can pursue his dream take on a clinical teaching role, sharing his wealth of knowledge with future doctors.
When he’s not in the clinic or hospital, Alek loves spending time outdoors, whether it’s camping, fishing, or skiing in the winter. He’s dedicated to building great relationships with his patients, combining his compassionate care with a touch of humor to make every visit a pleasant experience.

Meet Laura, our dedicated Clinic Manager, who has been an integral part of our team since 2004. After graduating from McMaster University, Laura moved to the stunning Bow Valley, captivated by its breathtaking mountains and vibrant lifestyle. With a background as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and first responder, Laura’s medical knowledge and problem-solving skills are invaluable assets in our clinic.
Laura’s enthusiasm for continuous learning and her ability to multitask ensure smooth clinic operations, making her a cornerstone of our team. Outside of work, Laura is an avid adventurer, enjoying activities such as mountain biking, climbing, skiing, and horseback riding. She shares these passions with her active family, which includes her husband and two sons, both delivered by our own Dr. Fowke.

Say hello to Megan Butler, our resident adventurer at Alpine Medical Clinic since the summer of 2023. Originally hailing from Newfoundland, Megan’s Canadian escapades have taken her on a whirlwind tour from Banff to Tofino and even the wilds of the Northwest Territories, before planting her flag firmly in Banff.
While Megan initially dipped her toes in the nursing pool, she quickly realized her true calling awaited elsewhere. With a knack for leadership that could rival a drill sergeant and organizational skills sharper than a scalpel, she effortlessly transitioned into her role within our clinic, illuminating our team with her brilliance.
When she’s not busy saving the day at the clinic, Megan finds solace in the great outdoors, where she’s often found conquering the wilderness on camping escapades. Back at home, she shares her space with her adored feline friends and her culinary wizard of a husband, Phil. With her passion for both work and play, Megan injects a hearty dose of humor and enthusiasm into our Alpine Medical Clinic family.
Meet Rebecca, our energetic and passionate Licensed Practical Nurse, who has been making Banff her home for the past 1.5 years. Originally from Windsor, Ontario, Rebecca has seamlessly blended her warm, Ontario roots with the adventurous spirit of Banff.
Rebecca specializes in geriatric nursing and care, bringing both skill and heart to her role. She is dedicated to brightening the days of our senior residents, ensuring they receive the best possible care with a smile. Her youthful energy and genuine compassion make her a cherished caregiver and an integral part of our team.
When she’s not providing top-notch care or engaging with the community, Rebecca is all about living life to the fullest. You’ll often find her striking a pose in yoga class, diving into a gripping novel, or exploring Banff’s stunning trails and campsites. Her adventurous spirit and zest for life are truly contagious.

Sarah joins our team from sunny Brisbane, Australia, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a vibrant spirit. Although she briefly returned home after arriving in Canada in December 2022, the magnetic pull of Banff’s mountains and her partner Cody brought her back to our picturesque town. Beyond her dedication to healthcare, Sarah finds joy in snowboarding, hiking, and powerlifting, reflecting her commitment to both patient care and an active lifestyle. Sarah adds a global perspective to our practice, and we’re thrilled to have her on our team 🌍🏔️🩺
