The Alpine Medical Clinic was established in 1989. In 2004, the clinic moved to the Bison Courtyard, an eco friendly building, located on Bear Street. We are committed to providing timely, friendly and a professional service to all residents from the Bow Valley, outlying communities and visitors to Banff.

Dr. Steve Shigeishi

Dr. Steve Shigeishi went to medical school at Queen’s university in Kingston, Ontario, and was drawn out west by the mountains, and completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Calgary in 2002.

He been with the clinic since the summer of 2003, and has been hiking, biking and skiing out here ever since.

Dr. Jane Fowke

Dr. Fowke trained at the Royal Free Hospital School of medicine qualifying in 1982. In Glasgow, Scotland she completed her General Practitioner and Obstetrical training before moving to Canada with her husband in 1985. In 1988 the family moved to Banff and started the Alpine Medical Clinic soon after.


Dr. Zuzana Triska studied medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and completed her training in family medicine at the University of Calgary. As a physiotherapist in her previous career, she has a special interest in musculoskeletal and sports medicine, and offers advanced treatment techniques such as ultrasound guided injections including prolotherapy and PRP. Her other special interest is in low risk obstetrics, maternity and newborn care. In her free time she enjoys mountain biking and skiing, as well as spending time with her young family.

Dr. James Clem

Dr. James Clem studied medicine at the University of Toronto before coming to the province of Alberta and completing his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Calgary. He has fallen in love with the Rocky Mountains and Banff has become his launchpad for adventures in the mountains.


It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of Dr. Ian Macdonald.

Dr Macdonald has been a fixture in the community since 1989. His expertise as a GP with special interest in general surgery and rural gastroenterology has been an asset to the community. His service, knowledge and friendship will certainly be missed.

Dr Macdonald would like to thank each and every one of you for the privilege of letting him be a part of your lives.
He wishes you all the best and can say without hesitation that you will be well looked after.


Laura joined the clinic in 2004 when she made to move to the Bow Valley after graduating from McMaster University.  Laura is an avid outdoor enthusiast that enjoys mountain biking, climbing, skiing and horseback riding with her husband and two young sons (proudly delivered by Dr. Fowke)


Monica made the move to the Bow Valley from Ottawa.  Monica is excited to gain experience in the medical field to help her on her way to a medical career herself, with an interest in psychiatry.  When Monica is working, she is a passionate philanthropist involved in a variety of programs  in the Bow Valley.

Riley Charriere B.N. Graduate Nurse

Riley studied Nursing at the University of Calgary and moved to Banff for her final practicum in 2017. She spends her time off snowboarding and loving the mountain culture.

Dana Mckay B.Sc N, R.N Clinic Nurse

Dana has called the Bow Valley home off and on for the past 27 years, making Banff her permanent address 2 years ago.  Dana brings to the clinic her years of nursing experience specialising in critical care.

Dana enjoys spending time in the mountains with her new husband and fur baby Gulliver.

Lauren Randall, Registered Nurse

Lauren came to us in late 2010 when she made her way to Banff like so many
Aussies .Lauren worked for us for 2 years before moving home to Australia.
Banff was never far from her mind and as soon as she received her Permanent
Residency she was on a plane back to her home in Banff.  Lauren is an avid
skier and makes great use of her time in Canada exploring and adventuring
whenever possible

Dr. Chawla

Dr. Chawla studied medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and then completed her Family Medicine residency at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. After this she completed an enhanced skills program with focus on obstetrical care. She has a special interest in women’s health, maternal and newborn care.

Dr. Chawla is happy to be back in Alberta, close to her family in Calgary. In her free time, she swaps her stethoscope for her camera, throws on her hiking shoes and enjoys the great outdoors.
